a culture

Photobucket

last week, the nytimes featured an article about the new interest in greek yogurt-
i just got a kick out of it and loved this photo - maybe a hint at a greek revival?

pictured john altoon, craig kauffman, allen lynch, ed kienholz, ed moses, robert irwin, billy al bengston

thursday evening- I saw the documentary about the beginning of the Ferus Gallery and
modern art late 1950s, early 1960s- here lies the record of my notes and thoughts
-artists and work - ben bartosh/john altoon/ed moses, 'vreeland'
-abstract expressionism to assemblage
'venice beach was the place to go to and vanish or create new worlds'
'you don't want people to know you are hungry'
-roy lichtenstein, 'white cloud', in personal collection of irving blum
-light, plastic and colour work - candy apple paint jobs, custom car culture, reflection of surface,
light on colour
-art primarily made in the mind and language as a visual experience (ed ruscha)
'art offers the possibility of love with strangers' -wallace hopps
-cal arts, the last plastic show
-centre pompidou, 2005/06?, LA art show

elemental

Photobucket

as of late, i have been wildly attracted to the periodic table.
the graphic elements of it - and the extensive amount of knowledge it provides.

she's a rainbow

this one has been on my mind awhile. maybe spring 2009.
going hand in hand with stars and hearts. fantastic whimsical shapes.
beauty influence. prints.

love ruins me

Photobucket

i have found a new love that is bound to ruin me for the rest of my life through-
brie-
and as of late, i feel a need and an overwhelming attraction to old school french bistro
food-cote de boeuf, lobster, cassoulet, etc - prepared in the proper manner-
julias guidance must come out!

fromage deux

Photobucket

another idea about cheese
a few weeks back the nytimes reported about overfilled trash deposits
in rome and naples and these particular areas also happened to produce
some of the best buffalo mozzarella - a curious article and sad idea
that the possibility of less of this cheese and really emphasizing the importance
of it- and the necessary traditions of particular cultures

an entry that has been mulling around for weeks- cheesemakers as artists
the return to tradition or more a revival of tradition and artisanal creations
in the obscure dairy regions of wisconsin, gourmet cheeses are unique
and handmade-an idea we see extending to other arenas and younger generations

polpo perfection

Photobucket

most recently, the minimalist aka mark bittman of the new york times dining section
made my head turn again for the nostalgia of my past trips to spain.
his polpo con patatas is simply done by trimming down the legs of a fresh octopus,
cutting them into pieces and boiling them in heavily salted water one hour and a quarter-
adding in sliced potatoes and cooking another fifteen minutes serving with good olive oil
and pimento.

i've died and gone west

a couple things have been pointing back to the left coast- a nostalgia for the
city of angels in its greatest creative era
its beginning influence as a place to make colours and waves-
modern art, surfers and sea, palm trees and silver screens and jazz

weird emotion collision

in this entry, just simply recording some thoughts that passed through my head today.

-the countries in europe- (Tyrol for example- between Austria and Italy)
and where they are close to other another an almost entirely new country is formed -
new in the sense of customs, foods, languages and cultures- an overlap of cultures, people and ideas.
-todays film, water lilies, about the difficultly of being a fifteen year old girl -
and how the heart so easily breaks and how arduous its to be dealt with when the
feelings are so unfamiliar- and ones experiences are nearly visibly imprinted on their person
because of their actions and reactions to situations - and how times have changed so as to
when i was experiencing coming of age and what it must feel like today
-finally, a copy of zola's belly of paris has been placed in my hands

a long buried musical influence

Photobucket

i have long been silently attracted to mariachi bands and felt compelled to finally
record my fascination. Reyna de Los Angeles is a first of its kind, an all female
ensemble, featured in the upcoming documentary, 'Companeras'. (we have seen
the influence in the white stripes last album, icky thump)

musical influence

Photobucket

the sounds of disco seemingly appearing to make a comeback in new forms:
the whitest boy alive
hercules and love affair
hot chip
its only natural and expected this would happen of course
