saffron sound

Photobucket
I had no idea I had heard this band before when I was waiting in line
to see them play at BAM a couple weeks ago. But, after some remembering
yes it is true. I was working backstage at the Ports 1961 show when they
were jamming and they are damn fun.
Red Baraat is playing a residency at Nublu this month. I, sadly cannot
make it this evening due to an overwhelming amount of overdue work
but I plan to be there the next couple of Sundays.

please stay, don't go away

I am declaring it Animal Collective week, as there are so many
events involving them in the next couple days.
(Ok. Two, but that is two enough for me.)
In anticipation and celebration, there will be daily picks.
Cuckoo Cuckoo felt appropriate on this edge of Spring day.

if love was like this, it would be better

animal collective continues to amaze me, shatter my heart and make
it melt like glossy wax. i prefer the EP version of this but it still retains
its lush charms. they have this unparalleled ability to make music
that when you hear it and close your eyes it somehow becomes an
all consuming experience. i want to dress in candy floss and float on
lurex carpets and kiss fishes and dance like i'm upside down and eat
luscious leaves like how this song sounds. there is sense in that to me.

sing a siren song, because i am evil

nearly every evening at 11pm, John Schafer on New Sounds has his way
with me. this lonely sunday evening full of work is no exception.
i was slain the moment i dialed in, which was a couple minutes late.
maybe i'm feeling melancholic but the new sounds immediately sparked
my interest. here is the podcast of the show i listened to. it is all about music
inspired by Homer's Odyssey and the Isle of the Sirens. i mean, simply brilliant.
i'm searching for a mp3 or video of the Laurel MacDonald Sirenaria piece
i fancied. this particular song reminds me of when i was quite young and
my family and i would drive back home to Iowa after visiting St. Louis in our
old school blue Mercades and we would listen to Hearts of Space. learning
to chill with music at such a ripe age. it also seems fitting because i put a
mermaid sticker up by my night light in the car. i recall being quite upset
when the wheels were sold because i was so fond of the sticker.
i had quite a kinship with it and used to talk to it and the moon as
we would drive along through the night. little kids are the coolest weirdos.

true form

I do not recall how I happened upon these musicians, but now I am
totally obsessed with them and their wild, whirling performances.
The Jaipur Kawa Brass Band hails from Rajasthan and like all things
Indian on this blog, they are mind blowing and heart shatteringly brilliant,
spilling with colour and life. As if I needed another reason to run away to
my Indian gypsy life.

high spirits and overflowing

since i was absent stateside this summer, i am still
playing catch up with music that i missed.
(save for the russian and armenian pop and techno music.)
i heard real estate this morning on sound check
and totally fell in love with their laid back, surf rock.
the last bit of this tune slays me.
it is totally summer and surf in a sound.
what i would give to be tan with my soles on a long board right now!

fashion is always on about the past. and constantly edie, andy, bianca,
jane, jim, bobb, neil, stevie, etc etc. please, i love them all just like the next
one but sometimes its refreshing to get another in there...

with that said, grace slick slays me.
the lead singer from jefferson airplane (+the great society+jefferson starship)
(thanks for that jude, i never would have known them without you.)
not only was she stunning, belted out with a killer voice but also totally crazy.
she attempted to lace president nixons cup of tea with lsd.
i highly appreciate the evident weirdness and sarcasm.
maybe in my next life, i'll find myself in my kindred 1960s.

love you, like i do

this song and really this entire animal collective album
played endless into my ears during my time in barcelona this past june.
i cannot separate the images and colours of my walks in the city,
through the moderisme and late at night along the beach on my way home,
with the wild romance of this music.
i swear these tunes were created to play in the catalan capital.
'in the flowers' makes me want to dance and scream, i love it.

i have held an intense fascination with the composer, writer and
all round eccentric, Erik Satie, since I learned to play his
Gymnopédies
when i was a young little piano player. this was always my favourite
piece and still i find it so thoughtful and expressive.
i recently discovered there is a museum dedicated to Satie and his life
in Honfleur, Normandy and it appears to be totally interactive and wild.
paris day trip in the spring? of course, i must wear one of maikos new
hand sewn couture ruffled up frocks!

and pandora played this for me and i remembered how i quite fancied the video
with adrien brody, my favourite dreamboat!

i rediscovered this album and have been listening to it on my windy walks
downtown from west chelsea along tenth avenue,
it seems completely suited for these pre-cold fall days
if you do not own this, i highly suggest you become enlightened
you will never hear or listen to sounds and music the same way
